Costume Advice

TOP IT LIKE IT'S HOT

Because sometimes, the accessory solves the mystery.

In the world of murder mystery parties, your hat or hairpiece isn’t just fashion—it’s foreshadowing. A dramatic top hat says, “I know too much.” A backwards ballcap screams, “I didn’t mean to push them!” From sky-high looks to shady fedoras, this guide helps you crown your costume with chaos, character, and charm.

Whether you're a villain in velvet or a detective in disguise, it’s time to top your look off properly.

  • Wig: Two-toned, wild, crimped, or spiked

  • Pro Tip: Adjust your hat mid-sentence like it helps your thoughts

DIY IDEAS

  • Add mystery: Pin a clue about your character under the brim or inside your wig - but don't allow it to affect the mystery - nothing that would cause confusion - just add something non-sensical, like: 'A diner owner paid me $500 to rescue a cat from the roof of his diner.  I accepted the money, found a teenager, paid him $50 to rescue the cat and not tell anyone he did it - and then I took the credit for saving the cat. I was hailed as a hero in the news.'

  • Add humor: Label your hat with fake brand tags or phrases like “World’s Okayest Alibi”

  • Add sparkle: Glue on plastic jewels, bottle caps, toy weapons, or glitter

ACTING TIPS WITH HATS

  • Remove your hat only when being dramatic

  • Touch your hat when lying (suspicious!)

  • Let your hat “fall off” during a fake struggle or reveal

  • Use adjustments of the hat to punctuate shady comebacks
