Costume Advice
BLACK BELTS & RED FLAGS COSTUMES
“Strike first. Strike hard. Solve the crime.”
In the world of mystery parties, martial artist characters are fierce, focused… and potentially very guilty. Whether you're a wise sensei, a rogue dojo rival, or someone who claims they trained in Kyoto but actually just watched Cobra Kai, your look needs to match your mysterious aura.
FIGHTER CHARACTER COSTUME LOOKS
Closet Staples for Fighter Roles
-
Gi-style outfit: White or black robe/jacket and wide belt (can be faked with a bathrobe + sash)
-
Loose black pants or yoga pants — kickable comfort
-
Martial arts patches: Optional iron-ons from Amazon or drawn on with a Sharpie for chaos
-
Optional color-coded belt: Black (dangerous), white (newbie), red (probably unhinged)
Footwear
-
Barefoot: The purist’s choice
-
Martial arts slippers: Bonus if they're obviously not weather-appropriate
-
Vans or sneakers: For the dojo dropout who still trains in the parking lot
-
Mismatched tabi socks: If you’re a mysterious ninja who’s a little off-balance
Hair & Makeup
-
Slicked back ponytail or bun — “sensei mode: activated”
-
Headband (DIY with a bandana or ripped t-shirt strip)
-
Black eyeliner war paint, mysterious scar drawn on with brow pencil
-
A single strand of hair that falls in your eyes when you say something intense
Accessories
-
Fake nunchucks or plastic sai (foam = party safe)
-
Scroll with vague wisdom written on it (or just your grocery list in calligraphy font)
-
Fanny pack full of “energy herbs” (probably Tic Tacs and beef jerky)
-
Wooden board for “demonstration” that somehow breaks when no one’s looking
-
Optional: Karate trophy — but cross out someone else's name on the plaque
Character Types You Might be Assigned
The Stoic Sensei
-
Moves slowly, speaks slowly, judges everyone quickly
-
Ends every sentence with a proverb
-
Says: “To know one’s enemy, you must first know their snack of choice.”
The Hot-Headed Black Belt
-
Too intense. Always ready to spar. Keeps bowing at weird times.
-
Wears their belt too tight. Breaks stuff for fun.
-
Says: “I don’t believe in accidents — just targets.”
The YouTube Trained Ninja
-
Looks like they raided a Spirit Halloween at midnight
-
Constantly doing flips, badly
-
Says: “I learned all my moves from a guy named ‘DragonGuy98’ on TikTok.”
The Mysterious Quiet One
-
Won’t talk unless spoken to. And even then… maybe just stares.
-
Might be the killer. Might be the chair.
-
Says nothing. Only nods slowly and vanishes dramatically.
The Karate Mom/Dad Who Got Too Into It
-
Coordinated dojo outfit with rhinestones or monograms
-
Brags about their “regional bronze medal”
-
Says: “It’s not just self-defense. It’s a lifestyle.”
Phrases to Say
-
“I didn’t kill them… I just knocked them out of alignment.”
-
“Their chi was off all night.”
-
“I sensed violence… in the energy field.”
-
“You don’t earn a black belt in crime-solving by sitting still.”
-
“What would Master Kenji say about this dishonor?”
More notes: Martial Arts, such as UFC, boxers, karate champs, should wear their respective uniforms.
Ninjas can wear the traditional ninja costume with some toy ninja weapons as optional props, or you can go more superhero style like with the Black Widow costume or an assassin costume.
The Kill Bill line or Mortal Kombat costumes are great choices for any fighter role.
