Escape from Dregs Island

It is six years after President Gray's Prison Reform Act of 2026. Prisons have been shut down across the United States, and all felons must serve life sentences on isolated prison islands where escape is impossible, and rules of civility are obsolete. The prisoners on Dregs Island must rely on sharp intuition to survive, as nobody can be trusted.

Dregs Island has been segregated into four factions after the first prisoners arrived six years ago. The Quay is the northernmost part of the island with the most vegetation and resources. The merciless leader Tobias and the Junk Rats, who are all confessed murderers, reside there behind a chain-link fence. The Compound is a fortified complex where the white-collared criminals live. The Battlefield is where the worst of the worst reside and where the trash of the island is sent. Purgatory is the largest sector where the misfits live in a disorganized village of huts and cabins.

Under fire from the American public, President Gray has acknowledged innocent people may have been banished for life to a prison island – especially with the newly-formed expedited trials. In a show of good faith, President Gray has asked the island to select one prisoner who is most worthy of a release. The prisoners are set to meet in Purgatory for the big vote of who to liberate from the island. Even though the murderous residents of The Quay will be ineligible for release, Tobias has made it mandatory for the Junk Rats to attend the gathering. This indeed will be a problem, as the Junk Rats terrorize the island population. This is where your story begins.

ALEX CARDIN

From Odessa, Texas, this recent high school graduate witnessed a hit-and-run accident that led to the death of an elderly woman. After an expedited trial, Alex was transported to Dregs Island – one of the self-regulating prison islands formed after President Gray’s Prison Reform Act of 2026. With human-hungry sharks infesting the water and government sniper towers surrounding the island – there is no possibility of escape.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER - HIT AND RUN OF AN ELDERLY WOMAN.  Alex maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered, handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

MILA COOPER

With a beautiful face, bobbed hair, and a leather vest – this former thief looks like she stepped out of an adventurous video game.  She speaks with the confidence of a seasoned politician and has been a prisoner on Dregs Island for three years. With a sprightly manner, this resourceful girl knows the ins and outs of the island and can help you survive – if you’re worthy. A former forager for The Compound, she’s now a fugitive among outlaws. Mila’s burned a few bridges with folks, so she lingers in the shadows and steals whatever she needs.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: NON-VIOLENT THEFT - MILA ATTEMPTED TO STEAL BACK A STOLEN FAMILY HEIRLOOM FOR A FRIEND.  Mila confessed to the crime.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tomb Raider-style island attire with a leather vest. Prosthetic left hand as an optional prop (or wear a glove) for the mark of a thief.

GABBI HARRIS

Looking like a fashion magazine cover, this island resident’s appearance is always on point, with perfect features that are as if drawn by an artist. Gabbi is a natural mediator, and virtue seeps through his/her skin.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER – INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER FROM A BOATING ACCIDENT. Gabbi maintains innocence.

LARRY BATEMAN

Larry Bateman was running a rescue service on the shore for the newcomers to the island, but it certainly wasn’t for altruistic reasons.  Larry hopes to one day be the first non-murderous Junk Rat. Larry believes that if he brings enough Red Stripe recruits to Tobias and helps build Tobias’s army, Tobias will allow Larry to be an honorary member. Larry is the least trustworthy person on the island and would sell his soul to get under Tobias’s wing of protection.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: NON-VIOLENT THEFT – CAT BURGLARY. Larry confessed to the crimes.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered, handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts.  Missing left hand is optional (wear a black glove to signify) for the mark of a thief.

TONY CARDIN

Tony is the youngest sibling of the Cardin family. Tony ended up on Dregs Island after an attempt at proving Alex’s innocence by implicating the judge who sped up Alex’s trial to throw him on the island. Raised by a single mother, Tony is a strong backbone of the family. Stabbed in the back on the first night on the island, Tony has endured more than most could stand.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER – UNEXPLAINED MURDER OF AN ELDERLY HOMELESS MAN (NO OTHER DETAILS KNOWN). Tony maintains innocence.

DIRTY PETE

Dirty Pete is a scarred man who wears filthy clothes and spends the day fishing for sharks to hand over to The Quay in exchange for Tobias’s protection.  A fearless island resident, Pete is unhinged crazy and recently burned the middle forest of the island down to ash.  Dirty Pete is always armed and sometimes travels with a stocky minion named Stinky Sam.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: ARSON – BURNED APARTMENT BUILDING OF EX-GIRLFRIEND. Dirty Pete confessed to the crimes and was caught in the act.

MARK ITO

Mark has one of the nicest huts in Purgatory, the largest part of the island where the misfits live. Mark dabbles in many areas and trades for various items, including clothing made from silk harvested from his silkworm colony. The island residents are typically seen with their prison orange jumpsuits or one of Mark’s rudimentary fashions. Mark also takes care of a family of tigers and is working on a secret formulation that is rumored to be able to take down Tobias and the Junk Rats.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: NON-VIOLENT THEFT – BURGLARY OF A HABITAT.  Mark maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts.  Your clothing should look best, as you are the tailor on the island.  Missing left hand is optional (wear a black glove to signify) for the mark of a thief.

HERMAN ARNOLD

A long-time resident of Purgatory, Herman has one of the most beautiful huts in the village, which smells of cedar and is surrounded by beautiful flowers. Three years ago, the Junk Rats kidnapped Herman’s wife during a routine patrol of Purgatory and hasn’t been heard from since. After that day, Herman became a recluse and trusted no one. It is best to stay clear of this disturbed man, as Herman will do absolutely anything to get information about his missing wife.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):   Tattered, handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts.  Missing the right (dominant) hand is optional (wear a black glove to signify) for the mark of a violent thief.

Marv Bell is a Yellow Stripe from Houston, Texas. After a bully broke Marv’s femur, Marv exacted revenge after recovering from the injury and hit the bully, the son of a cop, with a brick. Marv hasn’t learned the ropes of the island and is entrusting some of the wrong people. Alex has tried to intervene to save Marv’s life, but Marv’s fate is proving to be in jeopardy.

JULIAN OLIVER

A professed specialist in black magic, Julian often mutters spells or hexes at a nearly inaudible level. Julian owned a metaphysical retail store in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Julian claimed to be a psychic but was unable to see the police coming to arrest him/her for hitting a neighbor with a baseball bat for having weeds in their lawn.

PIPER TRISTAN

Distracted easily during chats, Piper Tristan does whatever it takes to watch the surroundings and eavesdrop on others.  This former news reporter toppled to the dark side after making friends with the wrong crowd. As an initiation into an underworld faction, Piper was to rob a fast-food restaurant to prove worth to the criminal faction. However, inexperience led to many mistakes that landed Piper on Dregs Island.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: NON-VIOLENT THEFT - BURGLARY OF A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT.  Piper maintains innocence but was caught at the scene.

JUNK RAT JO

Jo admittedly has murdered many ‘bad people’ and lacks remorse for all previous crimes.  Jo speaks like a pirate and is only concerned with making new friends on the island. Upon arrival, Jo became a Junk Rat because of the Red Stripe mark bestowed upon Jo's face during the transport ship journey to the island. Red Stripes are the marks of murder, and most of the Red Stripes end up being followers of Tobias – at least the ones who proudly admit to their crimes.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: SERIAL MURDERS OF WANTED, VIOLENT CRIMINALS. Jo confessed to the crimes.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Orange prison jumpsuit. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

TOBIAS

Tobias is the supreme ruler of The Quay and leader of the Junk Rats. Once known as the I-35 Killer, Tobias is considered the most dangerous killer who ever lived. As a free citizen, Tobias murdered over two hundred people in the span of a decade.  As a cult leader, Tobias directed many followers to kill as directed. Tobias only accepts murderers as followers, and they are referred to as Junk Rats by the rest of the island.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: SERIAL MURDERS OF INNOCENT VICTIMS, ASSAULT, ROBBERY, RACKETEERING, FRAUD. Tobias confessed to the crimes.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

MANSON

Manson is Tobias’s right hand. Manson is ruthless and has taught Tobias everything about leading a cult and establishing control of followers. Manson led a sect named The Family back in Texas. Members of the cult were implicated in many violent crimes in the area, but only a few were ever proven in court. However, Manson was eventually brought down by the police while taking part in an organized bank robbery.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER – TRIPLE HOMICIDE DURING A BANK ROBBERY. Manson confessed to the crimes and was caught in the act.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):   Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

IZZIE VINE

A serial killer known as the Mississippi River Dumper, Izzie has been a prisoner on Dregs Island for five months. Easily sunburned and afraid of insects, Izzie is unfit for island living.  Izzie is also allergic to half the plants on Dregs, which makes for long, miserable days in the hot sun. Izzie is rarely in a good mood and is quick to rush to judgment.  Izzie murdered five innocent people in the span of a year and was convicted of the crimes after a late-night confession to an undercover cop at a bar.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: SERIAL MURDER. Izzie confessed to the crimes.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):   Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

SASHA ALEXANDER

Sasha Alexander constantly cracks knuckles and whistles an eerie melody. As the former Butcher of Dreary Hollow, Sasha is one of the creepiest prisoners on the island. He has been on the island for nearly five years and is among the highest-ranked Junk Rats. Back on the mainland, Sasha got away with the murders for decades. The police can only speculate on Sasha's body count, as many of the people listed as missing from Dreary Hollow were never found.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: SERIAL MURDER.  Sasha confessed to the crimes.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):   Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

VAL KILMAN

Val is always getting into fights with everyone – even fellow Junk Rats. Notorious for being unfit to live in society, Dregs Island has proven to be no different for this sociopath. Val is known for telling long stories with no conclusion. It is quite frustrating to chat with Val.  Val ended up on Dregs Island after a road rage incident. A minivan on the freeway cut off Val's car, and Val chased the driver down and strangled the woman with bare hands. Many bystanders filmed this incident, so it was an open-and-shut case. Val is anything but innocent.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER. Val confessed to the crime, which was caught on video by bystanders.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer.

SYLVEN PAWLICK

Sylven has always feared the dark, silence, and thunderstorms. Sylven will stop awkward pauses in conversations – even by humming to cover up the silence. On the fateful night that led to Sylven’s banishment to Dregs Island, Sylven lit twenty candles to avoid the dark during a thunderstorm. After falling asleep and catching the apartment on fire, Sylven fled the scene without calling 9-1-1. This negligent arsonist caused over twenty deaths.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: MURDER, ARSON. Sylven confessed to the crimes after the overwhelming evidence was presented.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Island native/warrior attire. Two red stripes on the cheek below the right eye (use makeup) for the mark of a murderer. Since you are also an arsonist, you can also have a mottled arm. The government burns the arms of arsonists as a mark - so use red makeup (optional).

NURSE NATALIE

Nurse Natalie lives in The Compound and was sent to the island after she was caught collecting a meager cost-of-living salary from her charitable organization that was providing free medical aid to low-income neighborhoods. Nurse Natalie contends she had taken a 50% pay cut after quitting her lucrative job in the ER to run the charity and didn’t realize President Gray had passed a law forbidding people to be paid from charities – even if it was their full-time job.

DR. V

Dr. V leads The Compound, which is the armed, reinforced complex that houses the white-collar criminals of the island. A scientist back on the mainland that was nabbed for tax evasion, Dr. V claims the crime was the accountant’s fault.  Dr. V employs non-violent thieves to work as foragers for The Compound to retrieve things needed to create medications. Dr. V refuses to allow patients of The Compound’s hospital to lie around in beds, and everyone must work their fair share – even if they are sick or injured! Dr. V and Tobias are currently in a truce, but nobody knows how long this will be in play.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: WHITE-COLLAR CRIME – WHITE-COLLAR CRIME – TAX EVASION. Dr. V maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered medical scrubs. (White-collar criminals are not marked.)

DR. ROSE

Dr. Rose is Dr. Volkmann’s right hand. Nobody speaks directly to Dr. V – they go through Dr. Rose.  A surgeon, Dr. Rose is a valuable inhabitant of Dregs Island.  Dr. Rose was accused of creating a Ponzi scheme that attracted investors to put down large sums of money for promised above-average returns on an investigational medical technique that was eventually not approved by the FDA. However, when the pyramid unraveled, Dr. Rose was left holding the golden ticket to prison. Dr. Rose maintains that the investors were aware that the technique was a trial and knew the risks, but the investors’ testimony put Dr. Rose on the transport ship to Dregs Island.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: WHITE-COLLAR CRIME – PONZI SCHEME. Dr. Rose maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered medical scrubs. (White-collar criminals are not marked.)

VENN BOOMER

An eloquent speaker, Venn spews words with a poetic flair. Back in the free world, Venn was an Ivy League professor of mathematics. Venn mistakenly wrote a check for a large house mortgage payment on a checkbook that had been left in a recently purchased antique desk. The professor claimed the check had the same design as his/her checks, which was an innocent mistake. The judge didn’t buy Venn’s story.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: WHITE-COLLAR CRIME –CHECK FRAUD. Venn maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered, handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts.  (White-collar criminals are not marked.)

DRACIEN MALVOY

Dracien is a metaphor-emitting former engineer who never speaks until spoken to first.  Dracien prefers to linger in the shadows and watch others. Nobody ever knows what this mysterious resident of The Compound is thinking. Dracien rarely leaves The Compound’s reinforced walls. Dracien has been unable to accept the fate of being banished to a prison island, as s/he professes innocence on a daily basis. Dracien paid a contractor to fix hail damage on a roof and then deposited the check from the insurance company.  Because of new regulations passed by President Gray, it became illegal for someone to be paid directly by an insurance company - even if they had already paid the contractor.

CRIMINAL CHARGE: WHITE-COLLAR CRIME – INSURANCE FRAUD. Dracien maintains innocence.

Suggested attire and mark (prisoners are marked during transport to the island to distinguish their crimes):  Tattered, handmade-looking silk (or rayon/linen) shirt/shorts.  (White-collar criminals are not marked.)
